A solid educational system should include teaching kids critical thinking skills. Educated kids should be challenging authority. Well educated kids would question everything. Everything. Well educated kids would be pissed, furious at what the grown ups in the room are doing to the country they will inherit. Part of my mission in life, in my work, in my writing, is to educate people. Why? Well educated people would not have voted for Donald Trump.
“Why can’t you be my History teacher?”
I have had countless students ask me this.
I get it. Their teachers are burned out, disenchanted with the system, apathetic, and some are just plain bored. Most teachers start with the best intentions, and then they get into these thankless, exhausting jobs that we have created for them – teach 35 kids every hour for 6 hours with a half an hour break during which you will meet with students who need you; then after school prepare lessons and grade tests all afternoon into the evening.
And for all that? We’ll pay you barely a living wage, you’ll be lucky to get health benefits, and really lucky to get tenure. Security in this overworked and undervalued job.
Yay
No thank you. I have friends who are teachers, and they are easily some of the most decent, kind hearted, altruistic people I have ever met. I am not that nice.
I would be flipping tables over, shouting from the rooftops, leading strikes.
“Yea no. I’d get fired.” Is my typical response.
I love what I do. I consider myself a truth teller. I have a tutoring job in a private tutoring center where I can fill in the blanks for my students. I can provide them with context and information that helps bring together all the information poured into their brains from worksheets and incomprehensible textbooks.
I get to describe the realities of slavery in the US. They learn the depth of Jim Crow with me. We discuss the plight of women throughout the centuries in this country. I get brutal; I get detailed; I get real.
And they love it.
Truth Teller
Kids want to hear the truth. Kids want to be looked in the eye and treated like grown up people with grown up feelings and thoughts. Yes, I always cover what will be on the test, but I teach it in a way that will not only help them understand the bold terms on their study guides better, but also in a way that will stick with them for life, that will help them be better humans.
Earlier today, in a session about the US government, I was discussing economic systems with a student.
“Capitalism is good though, right?” He asks.
“Regulated capitalism is good. Restrained capitalism.” I respond.
“Yes, we want capitalism. We want innovation, rewards for our hard work, merit based raises and advancement.” I explain. “But we also want to be paid a living wage, safe working conditions, vacation, sick time, healthcare. You know, we want to be treated like humans.”
We often have these discussions around the Industrial Revolution segment of students’ textbooks, or around the Progressive Era that rose out of the Gilded Age, unrestrained capitalism.
Divided We Fall
I teach the concept of division by design. The language the government and big business owners use to make us hateful and fearful of each other.
“How do you maintain power? How do you keep people willing to work for less than they should work for?” I ask, rhetorically.
I answer my own question: “You convince them that it isn’t the business owner who should pay them more, it is the guy behind them, the immigrant, the black guy, the woman of any color, who wants your job and is willing to take less.
“So now you hate your competition. Now you blame immigrants for scarcity of jobs, for lowering the common wage, instead of blaming the guy who is walking away with billions of dollars, part of which rightfully belong to you. What’s worse: you wish him well in his success. You have been convinced that he deserves all of his wealth.
Have a Cookie
“Here’s an analogy.” I say, and I reach over for a sleeve of unopened Oreo cookies I had brought into the room earlier.
I unwrap the cookies slowly, drama unfolding. I take all but one cookie and put the pile of cookies on one side of the desk. Then I put the single cookie on the other side.
“Oh, here comes an immigrant/black guy/woman.” I say. I break the single cookie in half and add it to my pile.
“Look over there.” I say. “That guy wants your half a cookie.”
“And now,” I tell him, “now, you hate that guy. You resent him for wanting your cookie. You hoard your cookie and you sit and hope that owner with all the cookies might be so kind as to give you even a quarter of one cookie more after your many years of long, hard work.
“You never blame the owner. You can’t even see what he’s doing. The business owner has more cookies than he, his children, his grandchildren, and their children will ever be able to eat in their lifetimes. And they got those cookies, so many cookies, by intentionally keeping them from you, by refusing fair pay, by refusing healthcare, by refusing vacation and sick pay.
“And you hate the immigrant, the black guy, you form a KKK to stop immigrants and keep black people down because you are so afraid they are going to take the small crumbs you have. You vote for a guy who will build a wall to keep immigrants out. And you hoard your cookie.”
Woke
And my student sits, awake, unsure why they don’t teach this in school.
“I wish you were my History teacher.”
And that is why I do what I do. That is why I still can’t foresee a day when I won’t be teaching or tutoring at least on a very part time basis.
My students, upper middle class white kids, need to know the history of the United States of America. That is a relevant history that students need to understand to live in the world today. That is the US government. That is the reality my students are walking out into when they turn 18, expected to become contributing members of society. We expect them to participate in their government. We expect them to vote, to make a difference, to change the world with their ideas.
Or do we?
We’re lucky to have good teachers in our school but would I do it? No way!
haha yea I’ve always wondered about the school system in the UK. It is really gross here. We have some exceptions, and most teachers go into it with the right intentions, but the system is built to burn people out and typically only the bored and uninvested remain. It’s too bad. We need a serious overhaul. Of a lot. Haha.
Can I simply say what a comfort to find somebody who actually knows what they’re talking about online.
